Life on the farm this spring has been both busy and HOT!

We started off this spring with Pam going to the Heartland Llama Show in Webster City, Iowa.  To far to take llamas so I flew and Jerry stayed on the farm and helped take care of animals.  Love those midwesterners!  I had so much fun, already looking forward to next year.

Needed to attend as it was the location for this years American Miniature Llama Association’s Annual General Membership Meeting.  Great meeting with lots of sharing of ideas, information and suggestions.

Chuck and Elva, our summer workampers, arrived a couple weeks before I left for Iowa and much to their dismay were left in charge of any “birthing” that might happen while I was away.  Cheerio was nice enough to wait until I returned home.  Arrived home well after midnight on May 2nd and Cheerio delivered at 11 am that very day.  Nice easy birth.  Cheerio(Dam) and Franki (Sire) are both registered minis but “Savannah” arrived at a whopping 26 pounds and 27.5 inches tall.  She has great conformation, flat back, long neck and legs. All we can do is HOPE she stay at 38 inches or less at adulthood.

Bonita, who I though was also pregnant turned out not to be so Savannah will be our only spring cria.  Bonita finally got her problem tooth pulled in Mid May.  I can tell she is feeling better already.  Dr. Mike says she will probably have the knot on her jaw forever.

We should have two crias in the fall.  I “think” Sugar and Dolly are both pregnant.  Only time will tell!

As soon as I got home from Iowa I started shearing.  All are sheared now  including Moriah who turned 1 on June 6th.  Now I am in grooming mode.  One done, 20 to go!  Took me 2 days to do Midnight Magic and she is a mini!  Can’t imagine how long it will take to big ones like Hen or Smudge.

Weather is hot and dry.  Very worried about another drought this year.  Pastures just can’t take another year.  We did have a good rain yesterday but one day does not a season make!

So far this year we have sold:

  • La Bamba
  • Leah
  • Sabrina
  • Rilley
  • Queen

So the herd is starting to reduce.  Would like to sell 3 or 4 more this summer.
